Just around the corner from the Super Supermarket in Orange is this greengrocer. At 7500 square feet, it's actually on the larger side for an urban greengrocer shop. It has a large produce selection along with some international foods -- Orange is about 70% Black or African-American, and about 20% Hispanic. Those include significant Haitian and Guyanese populations, which separate Orange from other similar cities. This store represents those all of those populations along with perishables and natural/organic selections. This is the place to go, for instance, for a natural tea selection.
Though not brand-new, the store is really nice on the inside. It's clean and meticulously maintained -- the owners clearly take a lot of pride in the store. Plus, the woman who was running the register (probably the owner's wife) was very friendly, even giving the woman in front of me a balloon for free because it was her grandson's birthday. Great service!
About half of the store is produce, with the other half filled with grocery items. We'll see more similar markets as we move through Orange and East Orange, so stay tuned! But for now, we're crossing to the southern side of interstate 280 to see a classic store tomorrow here on The Independent Edition.
