The rather unassuming 5,000 square foot greengrocer shop actually has a very exciting secret hiding inside it. Before we get there, the store is mostly a produce market, with produce taking up most of the sales floor and a small, apparently closed seafood counter in the back left corner. A small grocery, dairy, and frozen selection is on the left side of the store. Can anyone spot the supermarket history here? That's right, this store somehow has an original Grand Union Clean, Fresh & Good ceiling fixture in it! It's an incredibly difficult thing to photograph, but a really impressive one. This was my first time seeing one in person. It's amazingly well preserved! How many others still exist out there? This is the only one I can think of off the top...

Geraci's Market Owner: Andres Garcia Opened:  2001 under current ownership Cooperative:  Krasdale Foods Location:  16 Mill St, Newburgh, NY Photographed:  November 22, 2023 Welcome to downtown Newburgh! The city, right on the Hudson River, is around 50 miles north of New York City. We saw the Adams and the Market Fresh outside of town recently, and now we're taking a look at two small stores in downtown Newburgh. Geraci's Market has been here in Newburgh for a long time, although I couldn't find an exact opening year -- but the sign alone tells us it's been a long time. It's been under its current ownership since 2001. The store looks to be about 4,000 square feet, and inside, it hasn't been changed for many decades, I'm sure. Frozen foods, meat, and produce are in the first aisle, with a tiny butcher window on the right side (you can see the space where it is below). Packaged meats and refrigerated produce line the back wall, with a few grocery aisle...

Red Berry Farm Owner: unknown Opened:  2014 Cooperative:  none Location:  357 NY-211, Middletown, NY Photographed:  February 3, 2021 It's time for our final Middletown store! There are plenty of grocers in Middletown we haven't covered -- see here for an inexhaustive list -- but those will have to wait until I can get back up to the area again. The Red Berry Farm opened in 2014 in a roughly 8,000 square foot space. And you guessed it from the facade -- the space is half of a former A&P centennial store built in the 1960s, or shortly after the ShopRite next door . There was actually another centennial in Middletown, this one right in downtown at 125 North Street . It's no longer a grocery store, but right next door is an indie called Garcia's Market. Red Berry Farm is mostly a produce market -- and a very extensive one at that -- but there are also a few groceries and a deli and seafood counter in the back. Liberty Farm Plus Owner:  unknown Opened:  2014 Cooperative:  none Location:  178 Mill St, Liberty, NY Photographed:  February 3, 2021 Just outside downtown Liberty is this small store, called Liberty Farm Plus. It's half-greengrocer, half-natural food store in around 5,000 square feet. It appears to have previously been an auto garage. One room, on the right side, has produce, dairy, and frozen foods. In the other room, on the left, we see a few short grocery aisles. Liberty Farm Plus is about 3/4 of a mile outside of downtown, but there's another supermarket outside of town that we'll be touring tomorrow on The Market Report ! Clark's Sunrise Market Owner: Clark Ordnung Opened:  1982 Cooperative:  none Location:  133 Sunrise Ave, Honesdale, PA Photographed:  December 22, 2018 Clark's Sunrise Market is pictured above in the hours well before the sunrise (I mean, it wasn't late at night; it was 7:30 but 7:30 in late December looks like midnight). But the 4700 square foot independent supermarket is located just outside of town on Sunrise Avenue and, if you're wondering what the place looks like when it's not pitch-black outside, here's a daytime photo . The store is small but very complete and very well-stocked, with produce and frozen foods in the first aisle. Dairy is at the back of that aisle, with meat and deli in the last aisle. I think there are four aisles here. The store is filled with Best Yet products from C&S. As we can tell from the street view I linked above, the supermarket is just built around the ground floor of a house. I have to assume it's been a grocer for man...

Pasquale's Food Market IGA Owner: Patrick Trichilo Opened:  2009-2021 Cooperative:  IGA Location:  25 Dundaff St, Carbondale, PA Photographed:  December 22, 2018 and December 18, 2019 Welcome to Carbondale! Carbondale is also home to a Weis , but for many years there was an independent store just outside of town of around 14,000 square feet. Pasquale's opened in 2009, although I can't quite tell what the name of the store was previously. Movon Family Market? The main grocery area has most of the grocery store, with frozen foods and some more grocery in a second room up a ramp from the main room. The deli is in the main part of the store, but then the second room was beginning to show signs of winding down at the time of my 2019 visit. The store closed in 2021. I was also at this store in 2018, but I was there in the evening, and Pasquale's had updated its hours to closed at 4:30 on Saturdays. Big Chief Market Owner: Eric Ofcharsky Opened:  1992 Cooperative:  none Location:  616 Poplar St, Mayfield, PA Photographed:  August 12, 2020 A town of just 1700, Mayfield, PA doesn't have a supermarket, but it does still have a grocer. The 2600 square foot store has been in town since 1992, but my guess is the building has been a grocery store for much longer. The store briefly closed around 2018-2019, which WNEP attributes to the owner being in unspecified  "legal trouble." The store, in fact, was previously down in Jermyn at the corner of Madison and Bacon . It's unclear if the store moved, or if there were multiple in the past. It also makes sense that the store has been around for decades, given its, well... less-than-politically correct name and mascot. The store has gotten some nice updates recently, with new fixtures around the small store. It has a deli and prepared foods, although it also has groceries and meats.
