TOUR: West Norriton Farmers Market - West Norriton, PA

West Norriton Farmers Market Owner: unknown Opened:  2013 Cooperative:  IGA Location:  1930 W Main St, West Norriton, PA Photographed:  July 22, 2021 A few days ago, we saw the DeKalb Supermarket in downtown Norristown. It's not a bad store at all, in fact it's quite solid, but I was hoping for a more exciting product selection, better perishables, and more A&P relics. I didn't exactly get what I wanted there, but I am very pleased to say that I found all of that here at the West Norriton Farmers Market, also doing business as Super Gigante. This store was constructed in the 1980s as a Genuardi's, which relocated from the other side of the strip mall. JoshAustin610 has some more interesting history, and a picture of the store as Genuardi's, here . When Genuardi's went out of business, this roughly 35,000 square foot store was not acquired and sat vacant for a while before Super Gigante, a chain of international supermarkets in the Philadelphia and Wilmingto...

Snapshot: Adelita's Mexican Market - Norristown, PA

Adelita's Mexican Market Owner: Ellie Adelita Opened:  2003 Cooperative:  none Location:  344 W Marshall St, Norristown, PA Photographed:  July 22, 2021 Our next Norristown stop is Adelita's Mexican Market, a small corner store that's one of many corner and small storefronts selling groceries (including quite a few selling Latin American foods) around the city. Looks like the store is about 1700 square feet. I do think Norristown is a very nice town with some great buildings -- a lot of old but nicely preserved and maintained buildings like this one, and a lot of trees lining the main streets. Anyway, our next stop is outside of town just a little bit to the west, and we're going to tour that tomorrow here on The Independent Edition!

TOUR: DeKalb Supermarket - Norristown, PA

DeKalb Supermarket Owner: Young Kim Opened:  unknown Cooperative:  IGA Location:  815 DeKalb St, Norristown, PA Photographed:  July 22, 2021 We arrive at the supermarket in downtown Norristown for a look around! This store was built in the 1950s as an A&P, which closed by the 1970s and became the Norristown Thriftway at some point. After that, it transitioned to the DeKalb Supermarket which was also affiliated with Thriftway/Shop n Bag (and branded with both logos). In 2016, when Thriftway/Shop n Bag dissolved, this store and most of the others joined IGA under the Retail Marketing Group. This store is under the same ownership as the Chelten Market , and interestingly enough, that store received a new fleet of carts shortly after it opened and that store's old carts were sent here to Norristown. As we see, they're all Pathmark carts, but some of them have been labeled with Chelten market stickers. The 21,000 square foot store appears to have been expanded out fr...
