TOUR: John's Fine Foods - Owego, NY

John's Fine Foods Owner:  John Hitchings Opened:  1963 Cooperative: none Location:  88 North Ave, Owego, NY Photographed:  August 2020 It seems that Red & White had a fairly large presence here in this region of New York at one point (see Branchport ) but the independent stores have now gone totally independent. John's Fine Foods is one such store, a delightful 3900 square foot market to the north of downtown Owego, a very nice town. John's, however, features a wonderful midcentury modern tower with a circular cutout including the Red & White logo! Great to see the sign remain after all these years of its affiliation gone. This store has been one of the ones I've been meaning to get to since I first saw drpep's 2007 photo over on Flickr. I was thrilled to be able to do so this past August coming home from the Finger Lakes area. It's another one of those stores where you enter on the right and cross to the left to beverage ...

Snapshot: Miniers Supermarket - Big Flats, NY

Miniers Supermarket Owner: Russell Minier Opened:  1956 Cooperative:  unknown Location:  84 Canal St, Big Flats, NY Photographed:  August 2020 A pretty bad quick look at this store I wish I could've gone into, but unfortunately didn't have the time to. The approximately 20,000 square foot supermarket has been nicely remodeled on the outside from how it previously looked  and looks to be a nice store as it was on the inside . I'd love to return and photograph this supermarket... but alas, there are simply too many supermarkets out there that I will never be able to get to. Up next, we're going to head east about 35 miles to the beautiful small town of Owego to visit a store here on The Independent Edition that's been on my bucket list, so to speak, for years!

TOUR: Canisteo ShurFine - Canisteo, NY

Canisteo ShurFine Owner: Canisteo ShurFine, LLC Opened:  2016 under current ownership (previously Cy's ShurFine) Cooperative:  none Location:  56 W Main St, Canisteo, NY Photographed:  August 2020 We're about five miles outside of Hornell in the heart of the Canisteo Valley to visit this approximately 20,000 square foot supermarket. Previously Cy's ShurFine, the store was sold in 2016 and fixed up a bit under the current owners along with another location in Arkport . Unfortunately, I can't find an owner's name for this store but whoever it is, is doing a great job. The store, though small, is completely full-service. It's also impeccably maintained with a very nice selection. We enter on the right side of the storefront then walk across to the left side where deli, bakery, and prepared foods line the front wall. Produce takes up the first aisle with dairy on the back wall, and meat/butcher and frozen foods in the last aisle to the right. ...

Coming Soon!

We have two more groups before we finish New York! The first one is in the Finger Lakes and Southern Tier regions of New York, in the central part of the state from near Syracuse down to Hornell and across to Binghamton. And dedicated readers of The Market Report will know that we've actually  done this area before  with several stores. Well guess what, we're back for even more! 26 stores to be exact, with coverage on all three blogs. The Finger Lakes are a series of eleven long north-south lakes in central New York, with the Southern Tier being the region of NY right south of that on the Pennsylvania border. Here's where we'll be going, from east to west and then to the south: Skaneateles Lake:  Skaneateles Owasco Lake:  Auburn, Moravia Cayuga Lake:  Waterloo, Ovid, Trumansburg, Ithaca Seneca Lake:  Geneva, Watkins Glen Keuka Lake:  Penn Yan, Branchport, Prattsburgh, Hammondsport, Bath Southern Tier:  Hornell, Canisteo, Big Flats, O...
