TOUR: Gould's ShurSave - Conyngham, PA

Gould's ShurSave Owner: Debra Cara Opened:  2013 under current ownership Cooperative:  ShurSave Location:  669 PA-93, Conyngham, PA Photographed:  November 29, 2019 Almost at the end of the Coal Region! We are just to the northwest of Hazleton today to tour the 33,000 square foot Gould's ShurSave. The ShurSave cooperative used to be a very large, very prominent group in this part of Pennsylvania (and affiliated with AWI, the wholesaler from York, PA that produced ShurFine products). When AWI went under, C&S acquired their wholesale division and distribution contracts for many of the independent stores. ShurSave still exists, but barely (there are only 12 stores left ). Gould's has a wonderful classic supermarket interior, but as we see, there have been a lot of updates to the inside, too, with new fixtures. The first aisle holds the dairy department. By the way, while the ShurSave stores used to sell ShurFine products, they now sell Best Yet from C&S. The Sh...

TOUR: Carone's ShurSave - Freeland, PA

Carone's ShurSave Owner: Frank Carone Opened:  2008 Cooperative:  ShurSave Location:  400 Front St, Freeland, PA Photographed:  November 29, 2019 Welcome to Freeland! We're to the northeast of Hazleton to check out this roughly 15,000 square foot store on the eastern side of town. Carone's is the only store in town, and it opened in 2008 but I'm not sure what was here previously. Carone's is affiliated with ShurSave. We enter to the deli and bakery on the right side wall of the store, with produce in the back right corner. Meats are on the back wall with frozen and dairy on the left side. The store was likely a supermarket prior to Carone's 2008 opening, since the store looks to me like it's older than that. The decor was likely installed by Carone's, though. The produce department is in an alcove in the back right corner of the store. And while I wouldn't say this store was particularly special, it serves an important need in town and also is well-...

TOUR: White Haven Market - White Haven, PA

White Haven Market Owner: Christopher Kubishin Opened:  2005 Cooperative:  none Location:  501 Main St, White Haven, PA Photographed: May 25, 2019 Welcome to White Haven, a small town of 1100 in the eastern part of the Coal Region, and incidentally the hometown of protagonist Liz Lemon on the TV show 30 Rock (although it's a heavily fictionalized, and much larger, town in the show). White Haven is located along the Lehigh River, where the Delaware & Lackawanna Railroad once had a line, and today that railroad is a bike path. While the supermarket in town is today the White Haven Market, the store of just under 10,000 square feet was built around 1970 as an ACME. In fact, it is a very flat pitched-roof building , and what used to be the side of the store is now the front as a strip mall has been constructed extending out of what used to be the front. We'll see evidence of this change inside. Before we go in, a look at the railroad heritage of the area. Here we also se...
