Our final Latin/international supermarket in Woodbridge, VA is the middle sized one -- Fresh World was over 50,000 square feet, while Americana was just under 20,000. This one is right in the middle at slightly more than 35,000 square feet. This is Todos Supermarket's older location, with a newer one at 16593 River Ridge Blvd here in Woodbridge in a beautiful 70,000 square foot location that was previously J&J International and before that, probably a large chain supermarket (Safeway, if I had to guess). Unfortunately, we will not be seeing that one although it looks really nice. We have two more grocery stores here in Woodbridge before we leave the city and they're both large chain stores, so check the next one out on The Market Report tomorrow.
I know it wasn't one, but it reminds me of a Pathmark.

DeleteBoth this store and the newer Todos further down Route 1 are former Giant-MD stores. The store in this post opened in the 1960s and was renovated by Giant over time. It closed with the 1980s dark maroon neon interior. My recollection is that this Giant closed because they had no place to expand. Also the neighborhood was changing to where a Todos type store better served the community. Giant-MD continued to operate a 1970s store on Dale Blvd just west of I-95 until 1995 when the huge store on River Ridge opened. The Dale Blvd store is now a thrift store. The River Ridge store was opened to serve what was to be a huge residential development going back to the Potomac River. The development was very slow to materialize. The Giant was never busy and closed in the early 2000s. There were two international stores in River Ridge after Giant. Todos is the third. The original 1990s Giant neon interior lasted through the first two international stores. This was the only store that had any part of the Giant neon interior remaining. From the pictures online Todos has done a complete remodel. It would be interesting to see if anything from Giant is left over in the new Todos.
