The small neighborhood of Bryn Mawr in Yonkers is sandwiched between the Saw Mill River Pkwy on the west and INT-87 on the east. It has one supermarket in that section, which is this Bryn Mawr IGA. The 7100 square foot store appears to have been created from several smaller storefronts, including a 3900 square foot one that was likely the original supermarket.
Inside, the store has a distinctive old-fashioned look about it. That's balanced somewhat by the Walmart decor visible here, for the produce department. As we can see, the decor has been retrofitted somewhat. The picture on the sign appears to be taped on, while the aisle markers have some some older category markers added on.
Dairy and meat line the back wall, with frozen in the second-to-last aisle and deli in the last aisle.
A very nice mural of a city street (perhaps somewhere in Yonkers) runs above the dairy department. This store is a rather odd combination of charming neighborhood market and just being old and out of date. It's not dirty but neither is it clean.
But the shelves do look pretty nicely stocked, and the store is plenty spacious.

Deli and hot food (along with baked goods, coffee, and greeting cards) in the last aisle. While the deli looks pretty nice, it was also empty (no employees or customers) right before lunchtime. I have to wonder how this store stays in business.

You might (or might not) be surprised at how many independent retailers make use of old Walmart décor. It might not always look the best, but I still enjoy seeing it.

ReplyDeleteInteresting! This was my first. I think it has something to do with the fact that the independent grocers are so prominent here so they tend to have their own custom decor and so on. I do find a lot of stores with Walmart carts, though. I'd bet that most people do not recognize it!
