TOUR: P&C Fresh - Ithaca, NY

P&C Fresh Owner:  Gregory Young and Myles da Cunha Opened:  2011 (under current ownership) Cooperative:  none Location:  315 Pine Tree Rd, Ithaca, NY Photographed:  August 2020 Welcome to one of two remaining P&C Foods stores! Once a major group in the Finger Lakes and Southern Tier (along with the northeastern PA region), Penn Traffic went under in 2011 and sold most of their stores to Tops, including Skaneateles , but three remained under a new company run by former Penn Traffic executives. Two are still in business today, with one location in Cortland and one here in Ithaca. Of course, you would hardly know it given the fact that the sign on the storefront is nearly invisible from most directions. I'm sure it gets plenty of business despite that, though, being just to the east of the affluent Collegetown neighborhood and immediately south of the campus of Cornell University. I never got the chance to photograph a pre-bankr...

TOUR: T-Burg ShurSave - Trumansburg, NY

T-Burg ShurSave Owner: Jimmy Seafuse Opened:  1982 Cooperative:  None Location:  2085 NY-96, Trumansrbug, NY Photographed:  August 2020 I first visited this store in November 2016 but that was a few months before I started photographing stores. So I was excited about the chance to return and photograph it this past summer. It's quite a good store and the largest in its region, at about 30,000 square feet. But mostly, it's very nicely remodeled despite its somewhat rundown exterior appearance. You enter on the left side to a beautiful grand aisle. Lining the left side wall is customer service, bakery/prepared foods, and deli, with packaged beverages and a cafe on the right side. Produce is at the back of the grand aisle. A note on the store's name, it displays the ShurSave branding but is not affiliated with the ShurSave group of northeastern PA nor of southeastern PA . My understanding of it is that all of these stores were previously affilia...

TOUR: Modern Market - Moravia, NY

Modern Market Owner:  Thomas Murphy Opened:  1946 Cooperative:  None Location:  1 E Cayuga St, Moravia, NY Photographed:  August 2020 With Auburn anchoring the northern tip of Owasco Lake (see here and here ), there is no equivalent city at the southern tip of the small lake. But about four miles south of the lake, we encounter the small town of Moravia with an independent grocery store in the center of it. Though it's probably been quite a while since the Modern Market was indeed modern, it's still a great little small town supermarket. I knew I had to check out the decor inside, but I was very impressed with how nicely the store has been maintained. You enter and turn left to produce and dairy on the left side wall. From there, you can turn left into the expansion (visible in the first picture) which is a walk-in cooler for beer and beverages. With the expansion and another backroom expansion in the back, the store totals just over ...
